Joe Garner lived up to the villain tag as he bagged a double to seal victory at Deepdale for Preston North End against Robbie Willaims’ favourite club. Im sure he’d agree it was a case of ‘Come Undone’.

The striker obviously likes scoring against Port Vale, as from the 10 scored this season, 4 has been against the Staffordshire side. He latched on to a Lee Holmes cross in the 43rd minute for his first goal that helped Preston start 2014 with a bang and make it 9 points from 9 over the festive period.

PNE manager Simon Grayson made four changes to the side that beat Shrewsbury 1-0 on the 29th, bringing super-sub Iain Hume back into the starting XI for the Lilywhites’ first match of 2014. Jack King returned in place of the suspended Paul Huntington, who picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against the Shrews, Paul Gallagher came back into the side and Lee Holmes made his first start since November as Josh Brownhill, Kevin Davies and Chris Humphrey moved to the bench.

The returning duo of Hume and Holmes made an immediate impact. Linking up in the second minute as Hume’s header found Holmes in space. But the winger blazed a curling shot over the bar.

Port Vale’s Louis Dodds beat the off-side trap and ran through on goal in the tenth minute but the away fans’ jubilant cheers were in vain as Dodds failed to test PNE keeper Declan Rudd.

Chances were coming thick and fast for a dominant North End, returning home on the back of 2 excellent away victories, and the home side should have been out of sight by the half time cup of tea. Gallagher missed a great chance on the edge of the penalty area, flashed another chance over the bar and Garner could have had the matchball had he put away his miss from 6 yards out.

At the other end, the vistors’ Gavin Tomlin broke away from Jack King and Bailey Wright and rattled the cross bar for Vale in the 38th minute. His fierce shot beat a diving Rudd but rebounded back out into play.

Preston started the second half brightly as Hume’s header grazed the far post in the 46th minute after some good work from Holmes. On 50 minutes, Gallagher brought the house down and possibly scored the goal of the season - collecting a ball and continuing his run let fly from 30 yards and rocketed in the top corner with the away ‘keeper not even getting a sniff of it.

North End start 2014 with a bang

In the 61st minute, Garner had the last laugh as time seemed to stop as he coolly slotted away North End’s third goal from a Gallagher pass and seemingly a walk in the park, but what happened from there on in meant it was far from it. Gavin Tomlin sent a powerful header past Rudd thanks to some good work from inspired substitute and in the 85th minute Vale’s Dickinson lauched a super long throw into the box that Rory Delap would be proud of, and Hugill came in at the back post and nodded home.

Preston defended in their numbers as Port Vale pushed for an equaliser in added time, but North End held on for a third win on the bounce, and had me reaching for the whiskey in the bar afterwards!
